Context & Challenges
In response to the challenges of the energy transition, a major automotive manufacturer wanted to experiment with an autonomous and eco-friendly electric vehicle charging station capable of being powered by solar energy while reusing end-of-life automotive batteries in a second-life application.
Project Challenges
Initial discussions quickly highlighted several key challenges:
- Ensuring continuous coordination between solar panels, power converters, energy storage systems, and charging outlets.
- Managing variable energy production while maintaining a stable and reliable user experience.
- Leveraging second-life batteries, each with its own unique performance characteristics.
- Enabling real-time data exchange through a unified CAN and Modbus architecture.
In other words:
he project required a conductor capable of orchestrating and bringing coherence to this entire energy ecosystem.
Our Contribution
Dunasys designed and developed the charging station’s central communication gateway: the component that monitors, analyzes, decides, and synchronizes the entire system.
The gateway supervises and coordinates all modules, including:
- Inverters, power converters, and charging outlets,
- Thermal and energy management systems to ensure performance and safety,
- An intuitive Human-Machine Interface (HMI) for end users,
- CAN and Modbus compatibility, ensuring complete interoperability between all subsystems.
