Dunalog: The origins of our data loggers’ development
Discover how our data loggers have evolved over time to meet our customers’ most complex needs.
Background & Challenges
In 2016, the teams at a major car manufacturer faced a challenge shared by all car manufacturers: speeding up prototype development whilst ensuring the reliability of vehicle data collection and analysis.
At that time, test campaigns lasted nearly a year. Engineers spent months recording, extracting and interpreting signals from on-board networks (CAN, LIN, Ethernet, etc.). This was a costly delay, at a time when innovation was accelerating.
It was against this backdrop that Dunasys Technology was approached: the manufacturer was seeking a partner capable of designing a bespoke, robust, intelligent and scalable black box.
The challenge was clear: to transform testing into a driver of industrial performance by reducing the time between road testing and technical decision-making.
The origins of a solution that has grown into a product range
This collaboration gave rise to Dunadiag, the first data logger developed for this purpose.
Designed to capture and correlate all vehicle data in real time, it has reduced test cycles from 12 to 4 months, whilst ensuring the reliability and completeness of critical data.
This success laid the foundations for a comprehensive range, capable of covering all testing and validation needs:
- Dunadiag (2016): the first bespoke unit;
- Dunalog (2021): a modular, networked version, designed for multi-protocol testing;
- Dunalog XL (2025): high-capacity model for prototype fleets and complex tests (autonomous vehicles, ADAS, etc.);
- Dunalog E (2026): essential, compact version, suitable for lighter applications.
Today, this range is available to order from the catalogue and is used by several European and global manufacturers: concrete proof that bespoke development can become an industry standard.
Project objectives
For our client, the initial aim was clear: to have a universal, connected data logger capable of:
- Simultaneously capturing network signals (CAN, CAN FD, LIN, Ethernet);
- Integrate cameras and inertial sensors to synchronise images and data;
- Automatically transmit results via 4G/5G connectivity;
- Reduce test cycles by several months through centralised and automated analysis;
- Provide a scalable platform, adapted to future architectures and the needs of field teams;
- Have millions of high-quality data samples to power AI models
- Reduce the human cost of validation phases (less human intervention thanks to the digitisation of data transmission) – Savings on validation cycles – Cost savings as defects are spotted more quickly – Logistical savings: no unnecessary back-and-forth and remote validation
Solutions developed by Dunasys Technology
To meet these requirements, Dunasys has designed fully connected, high-performance data loggers that combine industrial-grade hardware with intelligent software.
Every detail has been designed with extreme field conditions in mind:
Multi-network data acquisition: CAN, CAN FD, LIN, Ethernet, UDS and J1939 protocols;
Integrated inertial sensors (accelerometer, gyroscope, magnetometer, GNSS);
On-board camera for video/data correlation;
Secure storage from 64 GB to > 1 TB (micro-SD or SSD);
Wi-Fi / 4G / 5G and OTA connectivity for live transmission of test data.
Thanks to this architecture, engineers were able to access driving data in real time, monitor tests remotely and reduce prototype validation time by two-thirds.
A performance made possible by unique expertise: at Dunasys, the units are designed to be fully connected, from data collection to transmission, with no loss or latency.
Results & Benefits
Dunalog systems have redefined the way manufacturers conduct their field tests. Thanks to their native connectivity and open architectures, they offer:
Faster test cycles: reduced from 12 months to 4 months;
Full interoperability with test benches, cloud platforms and analysis tools;
Real-time remote monitoring, reducing travel and costs;
Full modularity to add cameras, sensors or extensions as required.
Beyond the Stellantis project, Dunalog has become a standard in automotive data logging: a ready-to-use, scalable solution suited to all test environments, from prototype to production.
Perspectives
The Dunalog range continues to evolve to support the transformation of the automotive sector:
integration of on-board AI for anomaly detection and predictive analysis;
5G connectivity for long-term testing across all types of terrain;
expansion into new sectors: autonomous vehicles, rail, marine, defence and aerospace.
At Dunasys Technology, we see every test campaign as an opportunity for shared innovation: helping our customers go faster, further, and with complete reliability.
